Just like many things, slow cookers have been know as “Crock Pots” after the company that is well known for making them.
They come in many sizes. I would suggest one with an eight-quart capacity.The newer ones have push-button settings so they shut off or enter a “warm” mode so you don’t have to worry about overcooking.
America’s Test Kitchen has some good advice and have tested a few in this video, so you can make an educated purchase if you are in the market for one.
